View from the
South Gate
his
view through the South Gate (the Assiniboine River gate, circa 1878) shows
the large compound flanked on both sides by a wide boardwalk and the company
buildings. The stone walls had been removed by this time and were replaced
by a wooden fence. The Officer's quarters are seen directly in the middle
of the large photograph and a close up view of the quarters is shown in
the left insert. The flag pole stands in the middle of the compound.
The Officer's quarters are shown centered in the picture,
right behind the flag pole. The Chief Factor's residence is the first building
on the right. The boardwalk ends approximately where the original fort
ended. A small fence behind the Officer's quarters shows the boundry. The
back of the Governor's residence can just be seen directly behind the Officer's
quarters.
Several cannons can also be seen. The
cannon on the left is believed to be the last cannon that was ever fired
from the fort. In case you are wondering why a cannon is not included in
the present display of the North Gate, it is because everytime it was attempted,
the cannons would eventually vanish.
