The Governor's Residence

Letter If you journey to the present site of the North Gate, you will notice a large billboard with a painting of a building on it. It is the Governor's residence that is portrayed and this is what it looked like about 115 years ago.

The photograph (circa 1878) has been taken looking through the North Gate. The Governor's Residence appears to have been a magnificent building bordered by trees and a large oval garden. Notice that a cannon points threateningly through the North Gate.

However, its ominous appearance is somewhat muted by the lush garden directly behind it. This shows that despite the 15 foot high stone walls and large stone bastions, this was a fort concerned with trade and governing rather than any real military aspirations. It should be noted that the walls surrounding the north half of the fort (the expanded part) was only made of wood.

This picture (circa 1881) taken through the gate, shows the Governor's residence a few years later just before the Company sold the property. It already shows the signs of abandonment.
